Together, they create a visual and auditory essay based on two traditional rhythms—Perra and Macizón—from the coastal town of Todasana. Ensamble is composed of 18 solenoids by musician Miguel La Corte, distributed across a Tambor Palitero by drum luthier Armando Pantoja and six paintings by visual artist Pepe López. For over a decade, Pepe López has been painting drums crafted by Armando Pantoja for traditional festivals in the village of Todasana. The paintings here present are preliminary sketches for a group of cumaco drums made from avocado wood, which were used in the San Juan celebration in 2011. In 2024, artist Pepe López invited musician Miguel La Corte to intervene in his paintings. It has been designed to enable distributed control for the public through low-barrier physical and digital instruments, allowing users to interact with and influence the system’s motion, sound, and structure directly. On 31.01.23, after two months of collaborative development -Conceived and directed by Miguel La Corte- CC0 went live at the CTM Festival 2023. Public participants were invited to engage in a live, interdependent composition accessible both online and at HAU2 in Berlin. The CC0 system consists of three instruments: “The Forum,” “Pendulum,” and “Pulse.” These were all built using a novel approach of web sockets with Max MSP/RNBO web target.&nbsp;CC0 represents a significant checkpoint of my ongoing practice in creating instruments for public collective composition and forms a key component of my research into alternative forms of digital music distribution.&nbsp; It is a system that proposes (on a technical and experiential level) a production-based process of collective creation as an alternative to standard, reproduction-based models of music distribution;&nbsp;a continuum of shared making—an instrument for a roomful of strangers. They are focused in supporting kids with refugee status through german lessons, workshops and activities to help them integrate. I provided a series of electronic music workshops to help them understand basic concepts of music and also to enable them to make their own songs through online, freely accessible music composition tools and instruments. Beyond striving to teach the kids new tools for self expression, the workshops framed electronic music as a way to understand the technologies that shape everyday life.&nbsp;The experience reinforced my commitment to developing public instruments as music systems that are easily accessible and playable on any phone.&nbsp;&nbsp; As part of this work, I produced a research brief surveying browser-based sequencers (no-download). Rather than a simple compendium, the study compared instrument “feel” and design choices that led to strong musical engagement and learning. Through this instrument I aimed to further understand the potential of the network as an instrument; Using the internet as a framework for collective creation. As a metaphor of the distribution potential of interactive musical experiences (in contrast to reproduction-based distributed muscial files that weight hundreds of times more), I challenged myself to develop a composition system which weighed less than 100kb in code and could be accessible from any internet browser. Interface design and concepts of this project are a tribute to John Cage’s 1958 Concert for Piano and Orchestra. It allows for anyone to upload polyphonic audio and receive a download of that music sung back in Herndon’s distinctive voice.
